How SARS refund tax works — 2026/2027

Why you get a refund

If your employer deducted more PAYE than your actual tax liability, SARS will refund the difference after you file your ITR12 return.

Why you may owe tax

If you had additional income (rental, freelance, investments) not taxed at source, your total tax owed may exceed what was deducted.

Medical aid credits

Medical aid tax credits reduce your tax owed — R376/month for yourself and first dependant, R254 for each additional member.

Filing deadline

SARS typically opens tax season in July. File your ITR12 on time to claim your refund. Late filing may result in penalties.
