02 · Registration

How to Register on SARS eFiling — Step by Step

▲ Short Answer How do I register on SARS eFiling?
Go to www.sars.gov.za, click eFiling, select Register → Individual, enter your SA ID number, and complete your personal details. SARS verifies your identity electronically. If verification passes, create your username, password, and add banking details. Activate your account via the email SARS sends you. Registration is free and takes about 10 minutes.

SARS eFiling registration is free and takes approximately 10 minutes if you have your South African ID number and a working email address. Follow these steps:

01

Go to the SARS eFiling website

Open your browser (use Chrome or Firefox — not Internet Explorer) and go to www.sars.gov.za. Click the eFiling button in the top navigation. This takes you to the eFiling login page.

02

Click Register and select Individual

On the eFiling login page, click Register. Select Individual if you are a personal taxpayer. Select Organisation if you are registering for a business. Enter your South African ID number and date of birth exactly as they appear on your ID document.

03

Complete your personal details

Enter your full name, surname, contact number, and email address. This email address will be used for all SARS correspondence and OTP verification — make sure it is one you check regularly and have access to.

04

SARS verifies your identity electronically

SARS attempts to verify your identity using information they already hold — your IRP5 history, address, and other records. If verification succeeds: you proceed directly to step 5. If verification fails: you must visit a SARS branch in person with your green ID book or Smart ID card, proof of address (not older than 3 months), and your tax reference number if known.

05

Create your username and password

Choose a unique username (not your ID number for security). Create a strong password — minimum 8 characters, with uppercase, lowercase, a number, and a special character. Write it down and store it securely — SARS cannot recover your password, only reset it.

06

Add your banking details

Add the bank account where SARS should pay your refunds. The account must be in your own name — SARS will not pay refunds to third-party accounts. SARS verifies banking details with your bank before activating them — this can take 1–3 business days.

07

Activate your account via email

SARS sends an activation email to your registered address. Click the activation link within 24 hours — the link expires after that. If you do not receive the email, check your spam folder. If the link has expired, go back to the eFiling login page and click Resend Activation Email.

⚠️ First time registering? If you have never been registered for tax before, you first need a tax reference number from SARS before you can register on eFiling. Visit your nearest SARS branch with your ID, proof of address, and proof of income (payslip or employment letter).
03 · Login

How to Log In to SARS eFiling

▲ Short Answer How do I log in to SARS eFiling?
Go to www.sars.gov.za in Chrome or Firefox, click eFiling, enter your username and password, and click Login. If prompted, enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile or email. Do not use Internet Explorer — it causes eFiling errors.

Once registered, logging into SARS eFiling takes seconds — as long as you remember your username and password:

01

Go to www.sars.gov.za

Open Chrome or Firefox. Do not use Internet Explorer or very old browser versions — these cause eFiling errors. Go to www.sars.gov.za and click eFiling.

02

Enter your username and password

Enter the username you created during registration (not your ID number). Enter your password — it is case-sensitive. Click Login.

03

Enter the OTP if prompted

SARS may send a One-Time PIN (OTP) to your registered mobile number or email for additional security. Enter the OTP within 5 minutes — it expires quickly. If you did not receive the OTP, click Resend OTP.

04

Navigate to your tax dashboard

After login, you land on your eFiling home page. From here, go to Returns to file or view your ITR12, or Correspondence to see letters from SARS. Use the top navigation to switch between Income Tax, VAT, PAYE, and other tax types registered to your profile.

04 · Troubleshooting

SARS eFiling Login Problems — Causes & Fixes

▲ Short Answer What causes SARS eFiling login problems?
The most common causes are: wrong username or password, account locked after too many failed attempts, outdated browser or cache issue, OTP not received (old contact details on profile), or eFiling system downtime. Clear your browser cache and try Chrome first. If locked, use Forgot Password or call SARS on 0800 00 7277.

Login problems are one of the most searched SARS eFiling issues. Here are the most common reasons and exactly how to fix each one:

ProblemLikely CauseFix
Wrong username or password Mistyped credentials or forgotten password Use Forgot Password to reset. Note: username is NOT your ID number unless you set it that way.
Account locked Too many failed login attempts (usually 3–5) Wait 30 minutes and try again, OR use Forgot Password, OR call SARS 0800 00 7277
Page not loading / spinning Browser incompatibility or cache issue Clear cache and cookies (Ctrl+Shift+Delete), switch to Chrome, disable browser extensions
OTP not received Old mobile number or email on SARS profile Click Resend OTP. If still not received, your contact details may need updating — visit a SARS branch
Session timeout eFiling auto-logs out after inactivity Log out completely, clear cookies, log back in. Do not leave eFiling open for more than 20 minutes without activity
eFiling site down SARS system maintenance or high traffic Check @sarstax on Twitter for outage announcements. Try again after peak hours (early morning works best)
Error: Your session has ended Multiple browser tabs open with eFiling Close all eFiling tabs, clear cache, open a single new browser window and log in fresh

05 · Password Reset

How to Reset Your SARS eFiling Password

▲ Short Answer How do I reset my SARS eFiling password?
On the eFiling login page, click Forgot Password, enter your username or ID number, and SARS sends an OTP to your registered email or mobile. Enter the OTP and create a new password. If you no longer have access to your registered contact details, you must visit a SARS branch with your original ID to reset in person.

Forgot your SARS eFiling password? You can reset it online in minutes — as long as you still have access to your registered email address or mobile number:

01

Click “Forgot Password” on the login page

Go to www.sars.gov.za → eFiling. On the login page, click Forgot Password (below the login button).

02

Enter your username or ID number

Enter your eFiling username. If you have forgotten your username too, enter your South African ID number — SARS will locate your profile.

03

Receive and enter your OTP

SARS sends a One-Time PIN to your registered email address or mobile number. Enter the OTP on the eFiling screen. It is valid for 5 minutes — if it expires, click Resend OTP.

04

Create your new password

Enter and confirm your new password. Requirements: minimum 8 characters, at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special character (e.g. @, #, !). Click Submit.

⚠️ No access to registered email or phone? If you no longer have access to the email address or mobile number on your SARS profile, you cannot reset online. You must visit a SARS branch with your original ID document (not a copy) to verify your identity and update your contact details in person.
06 · Banking Details

How to Add or Change Banking Details on SARS eFiling

▲ Short Answer How do I add or change banking details on SARS eFiling?
Log in and go to My Profile → Banking Details → Edit. Enter your bank account details (must be in your own name). SARS verifies the account with your bank within 1–3 business days. Never update banking details via an email link — this is a phishing scam. Only update directly on www.sars.gov.za.

Your verified banking details on eFiling determine where SARS pays your tax refund. Incorrect or unverified banking details are the most common reason refunds are delayed.

01

Log in and go to My Profile

Log into eFiling and click your name in the top right corner, or navigate to My Profile → Personal Details → Banking Details.

02

Click Edit and enter new bank account

Click Edit on the banking details section. Enter your bank name, account number, account type (current/savings), and branch code. The account must be in your own name — SARS does not pay refunds to accounts belonging to other people.

03

Wait for bank verification

SARS verifies your account with your bank electronically. This takes 1–3 business days. You will receive an SMS or email confirmation once your banking details are verified. You cannot use unverified banking details to receive a refund.

🚫 Important: Do not update your banking details via an email link or pop-up — SARS never asks you to update banking details via email. This is a common phishing scam targeting South African taxpayers. Only update banking details by logging directly into www.sars.gov.za.

Once your banking details are verified, use our SARS tax refund calculator to estimate how much you can expect back from SARS this season.

07 · Documents

How to Upload Supporting Documents on SARS eFiling

▲ Short Answer How do I upload documents on SARS eFiling?
Go to Returns → Returns History, open the relevant ITR12, and click on the Request for Supporting Documents notification. Click Upload, select your PDF/JPG/PNG files (max 5MB each), and click Submit. You have 21 business days from SARS’s request to upload — missing this deadline delays your refund.

SARS sometimes selects returns for verification and requests supporting documents — such as your IRP5, medical aid certificate, or bank statements. You upload these directly on eFiling:

01

Go to Returns → Returns History

Log in and click Returns in the top menu, then Returns History. Find the relevant tax year ITR12 return in the list.

02

Open the verification request

Click on the return. If SARS has requested documents, you will see a Request for Supporting Documents notification. Click it to see which documents SARS needs.

03

Upload your documents

Click Upload and select your files. Accepted formats: PDF, JPG, PNG. Maximum file size: 5MB per document. Rename files clearly before uploading (e.g. “IRP5_2026_Employer.pdf”). Click Submit once all documents are uploaded.

⚠️ 21-day deadline: SARS gives you 21 business days to upload requested documents. Missing this deadline delays your refund and may result in SARS disallowing your deductions. Upload as soon as possible after receiving the request.
08 · Platform Comparison

SARS eFiling Website vs SARS MobiApp — Which Should You Use?

▲ Short Answer Should I use the SARS eFiling website or the SARS MobiApp?

Use the SARS MobiApp if you only need to file an ITR12 individual return, accept an auto assessment, or check your refund status from your phone. 09 · Error Fixes

Common SARS eFiling Errors & How to Fix Them

▲ Short Answer What are common SARS eFiling errors and how do I fix them?
The most common eFiling errors are: Error 1000 (clear cache and relogin), Profile Locked (use Forgot Password or call 0800 00 7277), Cannot Request Return (check if filing season is open), Return Saved but Not Submitted (reopen and click Submit), and Banking Details Not Verified (wait 1–3 business days after adding).

Error 1000

General session or system error — often caused by expired session or browser cache conflict.

Fix: Log out, clear all browser cache/cookies (Ctrl+Shift+Delete), close browser, reopen and log back in.

Profile Locked

Account locked after 3–5 failed login attempts.

Fix: Wait 30 minutes and retry, OR click Forgot Password, OR call SARS 0800 00 7277.

Cannot Request Return

eFiling shows no return available for the tax year — filing season may not be open yet, or return was already submitted.

Fix: Check if filing season is open (July 2026). Check Returns History — the return may already exist.

Return Shows as Saved, Not Submitted

You completed the return but did not click the final Submit button — SARS has not received it.

Fix: Go to Returns History, reopen the return, scroll to the bottom and click Submit. Look for the confirmation screen.

Banking Details Not Verified

Your refund cannot be paid until SARS verifies your bank account with your bank.

Fix: Wait 1–3 business days after adding details. Check My Profile → Banking Details for verification status.

eFiling Loading Slowly or Not Loading

High traffic during tax season (July–October) causes slow loading times.

Fix: File early in the morning (before 9am) or late at night. Avoid filing in the last 2 weeks before deadline.

10 · Checklist

SARS eFiling 2026 Ready Checklist

▲ Short Answer What do I need before I can file on SARS eFiling in 2026?
Before the 2026 tax season opens in July, make sure your eFiling account is registered and activated, your login credentials work, your banking details are verified, and you have collected all supporting documents — IRP5, medical aid certificate, RA certificate, and IT3(b) interest certificate. Test your login before July to avoid last-minute problems.

Before tax season opens in July 2026, run through this checklist to make sure your eFiling account is ready:

  • eFiling account registered and activated
  • Username and password working — test your login before July
  • Registered email address is current and accessible
  • Registered mobile number is current (needed for OTP)
  • Banking details added and verified (green tick in profile)
  • IRP5 / IT3(a) certificates collected from all employers
  • Medical aid tax certificate downloaded from medical aid provider
  • Retirement annuity certificate downloaded from RA administrator
  • IT3(b) interest certificate from bank (if you earned interest)
  • Travel logbook complete if claiming travel allowance
  • Rental income and expense records ready if you rent out property
  • SARS MobiApp downloaded and logged in on your phone

Once your account is ready, use our income tax calculator to estimate your tax liability or refund before you file, and our provisional tax calculator if you are self-employed or a director.

11 · Common Mistakes

Common SARS eFiling Registration Mistakes — and How to Fix Them

▲ Short Answer What are the most common SARS eFiling registration mistakes?
The most common mistakes are: using the wrong browser (Internet Explorer), entering an ID number that does not match SARS records, missing the 24-hour activation email window, adding banking details in someone else’s name, and not updating contact details before attempting an OTP reset. Each of these causes registration to fail or the account to be inaccessible.

Using Internet Explorer or Old Edge

Many taxpayers open eFiling in Internet Explorer or older versions of Microsoft Edge because it is the default browser on older Windows computers. eFiling does not fully support these browsers — you will see blank pages, broken forms, or login errors.

Fix: Download Chrome or Firefox (both free) and use these for eFiling. On Windows 11, Edge (Chromium-based) also works reliably.

ID Number Does Not Match SARS Records

During electronic identity verification, SARS checks your ID number against their database. If your name, date of birth, or ID number does not match — perhaps due to a previous tax registration error — verification fails and you cannot complete online registration.

Fix: Do not try again online. Visit a SARS branch with your original Smart ID or green ID book. SARS will verify your identity manually and fix the mismatch on their system.

Missing the 24-Hour Activation Email Window

After completing registration, SARS sends an activation link to your email. Most people do not realise this link expires in 24 hours. If you check your email the next day, the link is already dead and your account appears registered but cannot be logged into.

Fix: Go to the eFiling login page and click “Resend Activation Email.” This generates a fresh 24-hour link. Also check your spam or junk folder — SARS emails frequently land there.

Adding Banking Details in a Spouse’s or Family Member’s Name

SARS only pays refunds to a bank account registered in the same name as the taxpayer. Adding a spouse’s, parent’s, or child’s account is a common mistake — SARS verifies the account holder name against your tax records and rejects third-party accounts.

Fix: Add your own personal or business bank account. If you do not have a bank account, open one (standard bank accounts are free at most SA banks) before completing eFiling registration.

Outdated Email or Phone Number on Your SARS Profile

Many taxpayers registered on eFiling years ago with an email address or phone number they no longer use. When they try to reset a password or receive an OTP, the one-time PIN goes to an unreachable address. This locks them out of the account completely.

Fix: Log in to eFiling, go to My Profile → Personal Details and update your contact information while you still have access. If you are already locked out, visit a SARS branch with your ID to update contact details in person.

12 · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — SARS eFiling Registration

How do I register on SARS eFiling for the first time?
Go to www.sars.gov.za and click eFiling, then click Register and select Individual. Enter your South African ID number and personal details. SARS verifies your identity electronically. If verification fails, visit a SARS branch with your ID. Once verified, set up your username, password, and banking details. Click the activation link SARS emails you to complete registration.
Why can I not log into SARS eFiling?
Common reasons: incorrect username or password, account locked after multiple failed attempts, browser cache issue (use Chrome and clear cache), eFiling system downtime (check @sarstax on Twitter), or outdated contact details preventing OTP delivery. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies first. If locked, use Forgot Password or call SARS on 0800 00 7277.
How do I reset my SARS eFiling password?
On the eFiling login page, click Forgot Password. Enter your username or ID number. SARS sends an OTP to your registered email or mobile. Enter the OTP and create a new password (minimum 8 characters with uppercase, lowercase, number, and special character). If you no longer have access to your registered contact details, you must visit a SARS branch with your original ID document.
How do I add or change banking details on SARS eFiling?
Log in and go to My Profile → Banking Details → Edit. Enter your new bank account details — the account must be in your own name. SARS verifies the account with your bank in 1–3 business days. Never update banking details through an email link — SARS does not send such emails. This is a common phishing scam.
What is the difference between SARS eFiling and the SARS MobiApp?
eFiling (www.sars.gov.za) is the full web platform supporting all tax types — ITR12, VAT, PAYE, provisional tax. The SARS MobiApp is a smartphone app for individual ITR12 filers — simpler to use, but does not support VAT, PAYE, or provisional tax returns. Both use the same login credentials. Businesses and provisional taxpayers should use the full eFiling website.
How do I upload supporting documents on SARS eFiling?
Go to Returns → Returns History, click the relevant return, and open the verification request. Click Upload and select your files (PDF, JPG, or PNG — max 5MB each). Submit within 21 business days of SARS requesting the documents. Late submission delays your refund and may result in deductions being disallowed.
How do I check my SARS refund status on eFiling?
Log in and go to Returns → Returns History. Click your submitted ITR12 to view the ITA34 assessment — this shows if a refund is due and the amount. Check Correspondence for any letters about your refund. If your refund has been assessed but not paid after 21 business days, contact SARS on 0800 00 7277. Use our refund calculator to estimate your expected refund.
Can I have two eFiling profiles for different tax numbers?
Yes. Go to Organisations, Tax Practitioners and Individuals → Register New and add the additional tax reference number. This allows sole proprietors with both a personal ITR12 and a VAT or PAYE registration to manage everything from one eFiling username.
What should I do if SARS eFiling is not working or shows an error?
First check @sarstax on Twitter for system downtime announcements. Clear your browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete) and try Chrome or Firefox. Disable browser extensions. For Error 1000 or session errors, log out, clear cookies, and log in fresh in a new browser window. If problems persist, call 0800 00 7277 or email efiling@sars.gov.za.
Do I need to register on eFiling to accept a SARS auto assessment?
Yes. You must log into eFiling or the SARS MobiApp to review and formally accept or reject your auto assessment. If you do nothing within 40 business days, SARS treats the assessment as accepted. Register on eFiling before July 2026 when the tax season opens. Read our full guide on SARS auto assessments for what to check before accepting.
